In the Western world, Historically, in that part of the world, women have worn dresses and skirt-like garments while men have worn pants (trousers). During the late 1800s, women started to wear pants for industrial work. During World War II, women wore their husband’s pants while they took on jobs, and in the 1970s, pants became especially fashionable for women. Today, pants are worn far more often than skirts by women, and many women wear pants almost all the time.

Although trousers for women in western countries did not become fashion items until the later 20th century, women began wearing men’s trousers (suitably altered) for outdoor work a 100 years earlier.

One of the most controversial subjects in  churches today is trousers on women, but there is NO controversy if you believe the Bible. 1st Timothy 2:9 clearly instructs women to dress MODESTLY, i.e., (of good behavior). A woman’s clothing says MUCH about her moral character. It is unbiblical and a sin for women to dress immodestly, clothing themselves like the heathen world around us. It was the ungodly women’s liberation movement of whores, kooks and feminists who through worldly magazines, hellivision and sensual women’s clothing catalogs changed how women dress today.

Please ladies, don’t wear pants and trousers in public, because a young girl is  somewhere watching you, because other women are influenced by you, because many men are struggling with sexual temptation, and mostly because God has commanded you not to wear that which pertaineth to a man (Deuteronomy 22:5). If lust is a sin, then so also is a woman wearing pants. If adultery is a sin, then so also is a woman promoting adulterous thoughts by wearing immodest clothing. The wicked world couldn’t care less about immodest clothing.

Due to our changing society, the church has been forced in recent years to reconsider its dress code. Of course, this reconsideration has produced much controversy and division. One of the most controversial issues surrounding the dress code involves the woman and trousers. Is God pleased with a woman wearing trousers? The answer to this question has been greatly abused and misunderstood. However, the answer can be found through a careful analysis of the Holy Scriptures and the facts of history.

In I Corinthians 11 :3, an important doctrine emerges that is essential to this discussion. The Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Spirit, writes, “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ: and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God (1 Cor. 11:3).” Within this verse, God reveals His divine order of authority for the entire universe. The provisions of this order are quite simple. The Supreme Being of the universe is God the Father. Next, Christ because of His role as our mediator, becomes the head of the man. Finally, the man is placed as the head of the woman.

Since the adoption of trousers in Western Europe in Late Antiquity, trousers have been largely worn by men and not by women until the early 20th century.In 1919Luisa Capetillo challenged the mainstream society by becoming the first woman in Puerto Rico to wear trousers in public. Capetillo was sent to jail for what was then considered to be a “crime”, but the judge later dropped the charges against her.

Women increasingly wore trousers as leisurewear in the 1920s and 30s. In the early 20th century female pilots and other working women often wore trousers. Actresses Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn were often photographed in trousers from the 1930s. During World War II, women working in industrial work in war service wore their husbands’ (suitably altered) trousers, and in the post-war era trousers were still common casual wear for gardening, socializing, and other leisure pursuits.

Similarly, in Britain during the Second World War, because of the rationing of clothing, many women took to wearing their husbands’ civilian clothes to work while their husbands were away in the armed forces. This was partly because they were seen as work garments, and partly to allow women to keep their clothing allowance for other uses. As the men’s clothes wore out, replacements were needed, so that by the summer of 1944 it was reported that sales of women’s trousers were five times more than in the previous year.

In the 1960s, André Courrèges introduced jeans for women, leading to the era of designer jeans.

In 1969 Rep. Charlotte Reid  became the first woman to wear trousers in the U.S. Congress

Pat Nixon was the first American First Lady to wear trousers in public.

For a period in the 1970s, trousers became quite fashionable for women. In the United States, this may be due to the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which declared that dresses could not be required of girls. Dress codes thus changed in public schools across the United States.

In 1989 California state senator Rebecca Morgan became the first woman to wear trousers in a U.S. state senate.

Hillary Clinton was the first woman to wear trousers in an official U.S. First Lady portrait.

Women were not allowed to wear trousers on the U.S. Senate floor until 1993.

In 1993, Senators Barbara Mikulski and Carol Moseley Braun wore trousers onto the floor in defiance of the rule, and female support staff followed soon after, with the rule being amended later that year by Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Martha Pope to allow women to wear trousers on the floor so long as they also wore a jacket.

Since 2004 the International Skating Union has allowed women to wear trousers instead of skirts in competition if they wish.

In 2012 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police began to allow women to wear trousers and boots with all their formal uniforms.

Only a rebellious woman, who deliberately disobeys the Word of God, would wear and trousers pants.

Pants on women are adulterous in nature, and cause men to lust and sin. Jesus made this clear in Matthew 5:28, “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

Women who wear trousers and pants deliberately cause men to lust, and commit the sin of adultery. It is this spirit of fornication which has caused tens-of-millions of unwanted pregnancies in the United States, and 48,000,000 abortions in America.

“Modest” means not extreme or bold, and not morally loose. Those can apply to trousers, yes; but when I have on a pair of trousers, I don’t feel that my body is covered. trousers are form-fitting, thus exposing my body. That’s just how I feel.

some principles for Christian dress. They’re very helpful, and they can be applied to male or female, pants or dresses.

1. Modesty – does this clothing cover me adequately? I Tim. 2:9

2. Not worldly – does this clothing reflect the current trends of Hollywood and TV? I John 2:15

3. Difference – does this clothing easily show there’s a difference between me and the opposite gender? Deut. 22:5

4. Inoffensive – does this clothing offend a brother or sister in Christ? As a woman, will this cause my brother to stumble or think lustfully about me? Rom 14:7-8,12-13 I Cor. 10:23; 8:13

5. Glorifies God – does this clothing glorify God, or does it call attention to me and glorify me? I Cor. 10:31

As for this being a matter between a wife, husband, and God:

In Genesis 3:7 … “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” Adam and Eve were convicted about their nakedness. Biblically, public nudity is a SIN. It is evil

The serpent said that Adam and Eve would become “as gods, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5) and that’s exactly what happened. When they sinned by partaking of the forbidden fruit, the eyes of their understanding were opened and they became aware of good and evil. They immediately went to hide, knowing that public nudity is evil. This is Biblical evidence that nudity is a sin in public.

Most women laugh and scorn at the teaching of modesty and appropriate clothing for women, but these are the same wicked fools who fornicate and end up in an abortion clinic, blaming God for their problems. Public nudity is a horrible sin, which causes lasciviousness. Whereas Adam and Eve respected God enough to run and hide in their public nakedness, idolatrous women today revel in it as a sport. Women take off their bras at the beach, deliberately wear transparent clothing, having no regard for morality.

“And they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” Have you ever noticed that the fig tree is the only tree that is specifically mentioned? (The tree of the knowledge of good and evil is not an apple tree. I do not know what it was, but I am almost sure it was not an apple tree.) These fig leaves concealed but did not really cover. Adam and Eve did not confess; they just attempted to cover up their sin. They were not ready to admit their lost condition.

This is the same condition of man today in religion. He goes through exercises and rituals, he joins churches, and he becomes very religious. Have you ever noticed that Christ cursed the fig tree? That is quite interesting. And He denounced religion right after that, by the way; He denounced it with all His being because religion merely covers over sin.

  1. This is a sensitive topic and I commend you for writing on it. I personally am on the fence about this. I love and own maxi skirts but, also have mermaid skirts. So skirts can be fitting as pants can be loose. My closet has scrubs that are not flattering in any way, and while I have fitting jeans, I also have dressy pants that are very loose they look like skirts. Regardless, I enjoyed the history and pictures you put in!!;)
